Using Mind Mapping Method for Writing Short Story

Abstract: This paper discusses the use of mind mapping method to write short stories. Many people who know about mind mapping method, but they are afraid to apply in writing, but this method is easier for us to write the essay because it has a concept that is well and makes us more creative with the images that exist in this method. Writing is something that is not easy, writing requires concentration and creativity. Many people get confused when asked to write, problems were encountered usually happens when they will start writing, they are confused want to start from, pick a theme, and so on.. Therefore this paper aims to introduce the ease of mind mapping method in application to write short stories. Although the mind mapping method has a weakness but this method provides more convenience for us to write short stories.
Key word: writing skills, short story, mind mapping method.
Introduction
Writing is a way to communicate other than speaking, in everyday life we do not loose on writing activities. Writing is something that is not easy, we have to know about how to write and know what will we are writing. Writing is more commonly known to us is when we pour all our ideas in writing in the form of the letters that form words, phrases, and clauses. Based on that we will construct a sentence, a paragraph to be a bouquet of course. Teaching literature in schools is an integral part of the teaching of English. It is mean literature teaching position more clearly and operational clarity of this position is expressed in a common goal of learning, which students can develop their potential in accordance with the abilities, needs, and interests and to foster an appreciation of the work of the literary and intellectual outcome of the nation itself. In Education Unit Level Curriculum (KTSP) mentioned competency standards are as follows:
1. Listening: Learners are able to listen to the narrated or literary works are read and understand the thoughts, feelings, and imagination contained in the literary form of fairy tales, poems, stories, plays, rhymes, and folklore.
2. Speaking: Learners are able to use oral discourse to express thoughts, feelings, on their understanding in reading children's literature in the form of fairy tales, rhymes, drama, and poetry.
3. Reading: Students are able to use various techniques to read to understand the discourse of children's literature in the form of poetry, fairy tales, rhymes, conversations, stories, and plays.
4. Writing: Learners are able to write a simple bouquet to express thoughts, feelings, and information in the form of stories, poems, and rhymes.
According Muhana Gipayana, the ability to communicate through written language is the need of every member of the community to experience the dynamics that are sweeping the world today, namely the development of communication technology. According to M. Atar Semi (2007: 14) writes is moving ideas or thoughts into writing and symbols have processes that produce something. In addition, according to Eric Gould, Robert DiYanni, and William Smith (1989: 18) creative behavior and requires understanding, experiences and events. According to Porter & Hernacki (2008: 152-159) "Mind Mappingjuga can be called with a map of thought. Mind Mapping is also a method of record overall in one page ". A similar opinion was delivered by Oshima, Alice and Ann Hogue (2006: 265), "Writing is process of creating, organizing, writing, and polishing. In the first step of process, create ideas, in the second step, organize the ideas. In the third step, write a rough draft. In the final step, editing and making revisions. "Of the written opinion of experts is our attempt to convey something to use creativity and ideas for the purpose so that people understand what we mean to say. As we know, so many types of writing, is writing to create a novel, make a report, create a script, diary, and make a short story.
Many people believe that writing is not easy and requires creativity. Likewise to write short stories, according to the Tarin Susanto (1984: 176), a short story is a story that has approximately 5000 words or approximately 17 pages which is centralized and only contains about is discussed. Also according Sumardjo and Saini (1997: 37) short story is a story that does not really happen and have word boundaries and not the contents of the opinion of the author. Suharto (2002: 1), the short story is: "narrative short (less than 10,000 words) gives the impression that the dominant singular and focused on one of the characters in the situation". Thus the short story is an essay or article that is not an opinion but can contain events that actually occur and events that never happened, short stories focused on one of the most dominant figure and in situations that are not so much. In the short story writing, we experienced many obstacles at the time wanted to start writing, sometimes we feel confused about where we are going to start writing, and an idea of what we are going to write.
Using the method at the time of writing short stories is very important, it allows us to make the concept of the ideas that we will pour in the story. Therefore the use of mind mapping method is suitable for writing short stories. According to Tony Buzan (2007) concept of mind mapping is derived from the merger of two elements, namely between text and images are formed as webs so easy to understand and interesting to read. A mind map is an image to represent ideas, words, or concepts that are arranged to resemble a spider diagram. Mind mapping is using procedures Reviews such depictions cobwebs, colorful, and so easy to remember, mind mapping has a composition that corresponds to the way our brains work. So mind mapping method is very easier for us to write short stories in order to make us have a structured and high creativity. By using this method the brain will more easily absorb and conceptualize what we are going to write.
Body
Writing story not just pour what we feel and what we want to write into writing. Writing is not an easy thing, write is a process that requires a high concentration. For example, write short stories, according to Suharto (2002: 1), the short story is: "narrative short (less than 10,000 words) gives the impression that the dominant singular and focused on one of the characters in the situation". So write a short story should have high creativity and conceptualized. In writing short stories have parts and characteristics that must be present in it, in the opinion of Sumarjo and Saini (1997: 36) as follows: short story is fiction (fiction), characteristically narrative and has a single impression. Another opinion on the characteristics of the short story pointed out also by Lubis in Tarin (1985: 177) as follows: Short Stories should contain the author's interpretation of its conception of life, either directly or indirectly, in a short story of a major incident which controls storyline, there must be a person who becomes a principal or main character, must have the effect or impression of interest to the reading. From the above characteristics are also parts of the short story as important, in a short story should have a theme, setting, plot, character, point of view, and the message contained in the story (wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerita_pendek).
In the short story writing we use mind mapping method, this method allows us to make the same concept as the way our brains work so that when we want to start writing, we do not experience confusion must be from where we start writing. Mind mapping method is the incorporation of two elements, namely between text and images are formed as webs so easy to understand and interesting to read (Tony Buzan 2007). Mind mapping also has the steps that we are more easily made, mind mapping consists of images having the center of thought, so interesting to read how to write a mind mapping should use a colored pencil. Steps to make mind mapping by Tony Buzan (2007):
1. Prepare a piece of paper that will be used to create an image of mind mapping, and also prepare colored pencils for each section that will distinguish us pictures. It is intended that mind mapping interesting to read.
2. Begin to determine the topics that will be developed, start drawing from the middle to make it easier for us.
3. Display the main branches with a blend of colors and a variety of curved lines. Try to make the branches with curved lines and not just in a straight line, so the image is not boring to look at.
4. Try to use a key word in each line for each word will spark new ideas and new.
While the sentence or phrase will restrict the freedom to come up with new ideas. This method is more use of the image to make it look attractive and bring new ideas, with the advent of new ideas then we would be easier to write and not quickly run out of words.
Michael Michaliko in the book “Cracking the Creative Mind Mapping”, said that the usefulness of a mind map is:
1. Aktive whole brain working.
2. Finised complicated mind of thoughts.
3. Make we focus on a single subject or idea.
4.Assist shows the relationship between the information that is mutually exclusive.
5. Allow us classify concepts and ideas as well as helping us to compare.
In addition, according to Buzan (2009: 54-130) Mind Mapping method can be useful for:
1). Stimulate the left and right brain functioning together and balanced.
2). Freeing yourself from all ties rules when starting to learn.
3). Helping someone drains away or distributes the imagination and creativity unhindered.
4). Make a plan or a story with branches on mind mapping.
5). Make it easier to develop an idea.
6). Make a personal goal planning.
7). Starting a new business.
8). Summarize the contents of a book.
9). Flexible.
10). Can be zeroed.
11). Improve understanding.
12). Fun and easy to remember because there are many colors and images in it.
This method has advantages and benefits that we can to help us in writing a story. If we already know how to create a mind mapping, the next step we do is starting to write. We will write posts originated from the core part of the picture, and we develop according to core parts of the image. Then it will be an essay without us having confused from where we started. Although facilitate our mind mapping mind mapping to write but also have weaknesses, this method has a drawback:
1). Only students who are actively involved.
2). Not entirely student learning
3). Mind mapping is very varied so that the teacher will have no trouble checking mind mapping one after another.
The advantage of using mind mapping is greater when compared with the disadvantages, the advantages of using this method as follows:
a. Mind mapping is usually more interesting than just a standard set of records or charts.
b. It is easier to see than the standard set of records or charts (more communicative).
c. Mind mapping is a memory, which is one of the media to keep the existing ideas your mind in the form of visualization of images or words so easy to remember.
d. In analyzing a problem, mind maps focus so as to produce a good solution.
e. Providing a holistic view of the subject matter or large areas.
f. More efficient in terms of time.
From the statements above, the use of mind mapping method is very easier for us to write a story. This method raises high creativity and make us not feel bored while reading it because it consists of pictures of interesting and colorful structured and conceptualized.
Conclusion
Mind mapping method is a diagram or picture that works like the way our brains work that has branches that many and various. Mind mapping is a very effective method used in the writing of short stories. It can be seen from how to make these methods and how to use them for make a short story. The story has a very suitable framework using this method because the frames can be split by using branches on mind mapping images. Pictures of colorful mind mapping will be easier for us to arrange events. Mind Mapping method is a new method for the record that the operation adapted to the operation of the two sides of the brain (the left brain and right brain). This method teaches to record not only the use of images or colors. Tony Buzan suggests "your brain is like a sleeping giant, it is because 99% of the greatness of the human brain is not used optimally." From the above discussion we can know that it is very easy to write using mind mapping method, especially for writing short stories so that we do not feel confused and difficulty in developing the story and we should practice writing every day then it will train us to get used to writing.
