This is the third installment and the conclusion of the Scarlet series. Scarlet has been moved from one prison to another as Prince John tries to keep her location a secret. When he finally reveals his plan to kill the King and end her life, Scarlet finds a friend in one of the guards and manages to escape. Her Grandmother, the Queen, is telling her that the only way to escape with her life is to leave the country. Her heart is torn between leaving to ensure her safety and the safety of her beloved Robin, and returning to the only man she has ever loved. Will she return to Nottinghamshire and bring the wrath of Prince John with her?
The story opens with a young woman in a cell that is steeped in darkness. Her memories of Robin are the only warmth available to her. When her solitude is broken by a visitor, it becomes clear that the prisoner is Marian and she is being held captive by Prince John. As the story unfolds, the atrocities that have befallen Marian before her imprisonment are revealed as well as her fearlessness and strong character.
The king of England, Richard the lion heart, has been captured. For the release of our noble king, the Holy Roman Emperor has demanded a sum of 5.000 pounds of silver. The amount were ungodly high. To pay for this, the queen mother, Eleanor instituted a tax on the people of England, one quarter of the income and the value of holding is now due to the crown of England.
The people get protesting, yelling and crying, they are suffering from this situation. They sat together, sharing their stories of how they couldn’t possibly pay. Richard does not think of the suffering of England. He just think of his crown and emperor. The crown does not stand for justice in England, the king just kill people in the name of the crown.
Scarlet has enough money and food to keep people safe. Until she find out how to do more, it’s her promise to them. She is not neglecting her duty to protect them. But she frightened if Prince John knew she still live, he would find her, he would hunt her and he would make the people that she loved pay for her being alive before he took herlife at last. The queen mother, Eleanor doesn’t believe that Prince John would hurt Richard. Scarlet wants to stop Prince John from his ambition.
Scarlet protected by Robin Hood, she send to Ireland with some knight, David and Allan. The journey was continued untill she came back to the kingdom. People had broken through the knights. They were fighting, everywhere, and my vision were still spinning as scarlet tried to stand and fell. The crowd of knights and fighting broke, and walking into the open space felt like falling off a cliff. Her heart were falling free, and I ran toward the dark shade of the tree.
Someone had cut Rob’s body down and laid him on the ground, a pocket of men protecting him from everyone else. I could see his boots from between their bodies, not moving. Scarlet stepped forward from Robin, going forward to see the mad look of Prince John’s eyes, the flecks of spittle on his mouth. Scarlet asked that she just a thief. She stole the nobles — they will never put their trust in Prince John again, even if Richard never comes home. She stole Prince John power, because without them, Prince John are just a spoiled child with very few lands. And she stole his mother, because she just likes Scarlet better than Prince John.
Scarlet told to John, when John took her fingers that John would regret this. Everything she has taken, John lets Scarlet steal. He cradled his sore parts as Scarlet snatched up the knife, reclaiming his attention as Scarlet held it to his throat. Scharlet will never be the schemer John. She will never use words as well as John. But there are two things that make Scarlet powerful. There are two things that make Scarlet stronger than John. Her heart holds her love, her hope, and her faith. Her heart is unyielding, her heart is stalwart, and her heart is true. It will never be broken by the likes of John. But does John know what else makes Scarlet strong,
Scarlet said she could kill John. John killed David. John has hurt so many, he deserves it for what he’ve done. Scarlet maybe a bastard, a princess, a thief, and a royal. But does John knows what the other thing is that makes her more powerful than John. For the longest time, no one really knew about Scarlet. She were Rob’s secret, his informant, his shadow in dark places. They didn’t see Scarlet, and She didn’t mind that they didn’t see. But now Scarlet is Rob’s wife, and her story isn’t a secret. It’s a song, a legend, a story people tell to their children at night.
There’s a funny thing about light and darkness — like hope, it can never blot out either one completely. They always exist, side by side, bright light making shadows darker, darkness making the light more beautiful, a tempting siren call.
Scarlet can’t hate the darkest parts of my self. They are the things that showed her how special and rare the bright flames of trust, loyalty, friendship, and love were. The darkness showed her how to love Rob. But now she chooses light , fire and love. Now she chooses freedom.
As far as happy endings go, there are a lot of accurate pieces of history in here. Winchester does marry Margaret. Isabel and Prince John annul their marriage so that he can marry Isabelle of Angouleme, and Isabel of Gloucester marries Essex.
Marian/Scarlet is tougher and more capable than most of the men she encounters and she is formidable with blade in hand. There are glimpses of the Robin Hood that I grew up with, but the original tale has been delightfully twisted in ways I could have never imagined. I definitely need to go back and read the first two books and then will read this one again. Although King Richard is missing, a replica of his lion heart beats wildly in the chest of the amazing Scarlet. Rob and Scarlet have finally admitted their feelings for each other. The kissing, the support and respect they had for each other was endearing and had swooning.
