  2. TITLE OF THE RESEARCH Improving Students’ Speaking Skill Through Debate Technique (A Classroom Action Research with First Semester Students of English Language Teaching Department Tarbiyah Faculty at STAIN Kediri in the Academic Year of 2015/2016)
  3. BACKGROUND OF THE RESEARCH As we know, now English language has become an international medium of communication among  the people on the world. Most aspects of life also use English language such as technology, commerce, and education. In Indonesia English Language was taught since primary schools till high instituation. Although most people in Indonesia have learned English language, they still choose unappropriate words when they write or say in english whereas they have learned since young. It is because English language is our second language and we have the different culture with English culture. So that,  this phenomenon which makes me interesting to do research in analyzing of Improving students speaking skill through debate technique.
  4. RESEARCH QUESTION In this study, I will use two question for the base of research design in this study, there are:


  • How is the implementation of debate technique to improve students’ speaking skill?
  • How is the improvement of students’ speaking skill after being taught using debate technique?




  1. LITERATURE REVIEW In this reseach, I will adopt the theory from Bellon, Joe, (2006) which state that the research based Justification for Debate Across the Curriculum. Argumentation and Advocacy are indicative both of the state of the learner’ knowledge and of the ways in which a second language is learned. And also Goodwin, J. (2003). Students’ Perspectives on Debate Exercises in Content Area Classes. Communication Education
  2. RESEARCH DESIGN In this study I will use descriptive research design which focuses on speaking skill. A thorough and detailed procedure is made by tallying and synchronizing with the underlying theory used, which is derived from Bellon, J Analysis and Goodwin, J.
  3. METHODOLOGY In observation has a goal of obtaining information by seeing and hearing phenomenon while it is happening. In this research, observation was applied to figure out and to describe the effectiveness of debate and to know how it improved students’ speaking at STAIN Kediri in academic year 2015/2016 by watching/or listening to the events, than recording what occurred. The research procedure as follows:

The author meets an English teacher to consult on the use of small group discussion activities for teaching. Besides, the author also asks the material and learning time
• The author formulates hypothesis
• The author makes a pre-test with a reading
• The author makes a model of learning programs
• Doing treatment with small group discussion
• Perform post-test
• The author collects and analyzes data

4. OBJECTIVE OF THE RESEARCH Based on the reseach question above, the objective of the research is:

  1. To describe the implementation of debate technique to improve students’ speaking skill.
  2. To identify how much students’ speaking skill improvement after beingtaught by using debate technique.
